Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Public Domain Intelligence

The public domain consists of creative works (books, music, art) whose copyrights have expired. Once in the public domain, anyone can freely use, adapt, sell, or build upon these works without permission or payment. It's completely legal and how Disney built their empire!

Yes! Using public domain works is 100% legal. Major companies do it all the time - Netflix's "Enola Holmes," Disney's fairy tale movies, and thousands of publishers reprinting classics. However, copyright law is complex and varies by country, so we always recommend verifying the status of specific works independently.

We use data from HathiTrust Digital Library, one of the world's most respected digital libraries, plus Project Gutenberg and Open Library. We track copyright expiration dates based on author death dates and publication years. Each work has a confidence level (high/medium/low) based on data completeness. Always verify independently before commercial use.

There are many ways! Republish with new covers/formatting, create adaptations (movies, games, podcasts), make translations, add illustrations or annotations, create study guides, or combine multiple works into collections. Publishers regularly earn $10K-$100K+ per title from well-chosen public domain works.

Copyright terms vary by country. In the US, it's generally 95 years from publication (for pre-1978 works). In the EU/UK, it's 70 years after the author's death. Canada is 50 years after death. This means a work might be free to use in Canada but still protected in the US - creating unique opportunities for location-specific projects.

We're launching in July 2025! Beta users who join our Hidden Gems newsletter get early access, 20 free searches (vs 3), and will be first to access premium features like CSV exports, monitoring lists, and API access. The newsletter also delivers valuable PD discoveries every week while you wait.

This is the golden age of literature! Works from 1925-1940 are entering public domain NOW through 2036. This includes masterpieces by Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Virginia Woolf, and thousands of other valuable titles. It's the sweet spot where great literature meets immediate opportunity.

Absolutely. We only collect email addresses for our newsletter and search queries for improving the platform. We never sell your data, and you can unsubscribe anytime. All data is encrypted and stored securely. See our privacy policy for full details.
